A2 UNIT 3 - BIODIVERSITY UNDER THREAT

UNIT 3 - BIODIVERSITY UNDER THREAT

There are 3 key elements to Topic 3 (Biodiversity Under Threat):

1. Defining biodiversity
2. Biodiversity threats
3. Managing biodiversity

Revision:

Go through the Edexcel PPT presentation on topic 3. The file is loaded on the G Drive, or use the link below:

http://www.google.co.uk/#q=edexcel+A2+geography+Unit+3+topic+3+biodiversity+under+threat+powerpoint

As part of your revision you need to have a detailed knowledge and understanding of at least two case studies, biodiversity hotspots and of course need to know the key vocabulary!

AS GEOGRAPHY - COASTAL MANAGEMENT AND REBRANDING REVISION

Coastal Management

As luck would have it, the Birling Gap in Sussex featured in the press this weekend, where erosion of the chalk cliffs is reaching rates of .75m per year.

Carry out some research into erosion at Birling Gap, with a focus on 3 main elements:

1. Coastal erosion - the processes and why the rate of erosion os so rapid
2. The "players" - who has an interest?
3. Management Strategies - what is being done, is planned, or could be done?

Produce a detailed fact sheet, with location map and some current images.

See the links below:

Then...complete the same exercise for a stretch of coastline we have visited as part of our fieldwork.

Re-branding:

What is re-branding?
Who are the "players"?
What are the expected outcomes of rebranding?

Learn at least two case studies, plus our own fieldwork investigation and outcomes.

Unit 4 Research Report

The theme of the research project is the management of tectonic hazards (primary and secondary), before, during and after an event, at a range of geographical scales, levels of development, covering both rural and urban environments. You should have completed your A3 audit sheet to ensure that you have coverage of all aspects of the research focus, together with case study examples.

The aim this week should be to identify a variety of visual media (maps, diagrams, charts, etc) that could potentially be used in the body of the report.

It is suggested that you research about 6 suitable items, which you will then have to become proficient at accurately reproducing.
