GEOGRAPHY REVIEW MAGAZINE

The library has subscribed to "Geography Review" magazine, which should be essential reading for all students taking AS/A2 Geography at Crown Woods. It is easy to read, a reliable source of case studies to support your classwork and research and provides useful tips towards exam success.



Please make a point of visiting the library once a month to read the magazine/make notes, etc.

PRE PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS JANUARY 2014

The timetable for the Post 16 Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) (Mocks) has been published. Exams, will take place as follows:

Yr 12: Monday 06 Jan 14: 1300-1430 (Covering Units 1 and 2)

Yr 13: Thursday 09 Jan 14: 0900-1030 (Covering Units 3 and 4)

You are all advised to spend some part of the Christmas break in genuine revision and preparation. They will give you a good guide to your curent level of understanding.

Carry out a case study into the Aral Sea. Use the template I have placed on the G Drive (Aral Sea Case Study). Utilise your text books and the internet to populate the sections on the template.

Key Question: "What should be done to restore the Aral Sea?" Answer as a report (1 side A4)

Rebranding Places:

Complete a research essay on rebranding places: " In what ways might coastal rebranding strategies vary from those of an urban environment?"

Stages:

Introduction: (to demonstrate that you understand the title and the command word/s)
Part 1: Coastal rebranding strategies - quote Walton-on-the-Naze and Whitley Bay for examples and evidence.
Part 2: Urban rebranding strategies- quote Eltham, Birmingham, Liverpool, etc
Summary/Conclusion: Summarise the differences between stategies, aims of strategies and similarities, eg funding sources, types of initiative, goals and outcomes

Overall: You MUST identify some named strategies for both urban and coastal, make an explicit effort to compare strategies and provide an equal balance between coastal/urban, similarities/differences.

Use: The text books, case studies, your notes, internet (if availabble) and worksheets you have been given.

Type up, print off and hand in ASAP

AS STUDY SKILLS DAY MON 10 FEB 14

 
 
An AS Study Skills Day is being organised by The Royal Geogrpahical Society on Monday 10th Feb 2014. The day will include a number of workshops on key AS topics, which you can select to attend. There will be a charge of £10, which included lunch. Because we are members of the RGS this represents a considerable saving on the full price of £25 per person.

A letter is available on the G Drive for you to download, print, complete and return, with £10 cash or a cheque made payable to "Crown Woods College".

When more details and a programme of events becomes available, I will publish on the blog.

A2 STUDY DAY

We are due to attend the RGS A2 Study Day on Monday 14th October. Have a look at the workshops so that you have a good idea of what you will want to sign up for on arrival.
Please note that you will be provided with a sandwich lunch and so no other food can be taken into the RGS. Also note that you will not be permitted to leave the building during the day.
 
 

Yr 12 AS Geography: Unit 2 Mr Wilson

Between now and Monday 21 October you should all carry out the following activities:

1. If you have not already done so, download a copy of the Specification for the course (there is a copy in the resources folder on the G Drive)
2. In your own time complete the practical "re-branding of Eltham" investigation and have a look at the results.
3. Read pages 43-48 of the Specification, which covers Topic 4 (Rebranding Places).
4. Using your text books, research rebranding places and make notes in your folders.
5. Complete the essay (1000 words): "Why is re-branding needed in some places?"

YEAR 12/13 CLASSES MON 16-FRI 20 SEP 13

I will be out of school for the whole of the week 16-20 Sep 13. In outline your tasks are:

Yr 12: Unit 2- Sampling Methods. Read the sheets provided (Yellow folder on bookshelf in AR105) and complete the two tasks required.
Remember to have your "virtual field trip" to a coastal town in the UK ready for Monday 23rd Sep!

Yr 13: Unit 3- Energy Security. From the Philip Allan book. Read pages 3-9 and make notes on the types of energy. Then complete Question 1 on page 32.

Yr 13: Unit 4- Complete the reposrt on Eltham as a Historic Heritage Town

Resources can be found in the respective folders on the G Drive.
